Fall arrest is the form of fall protection which involves the safe stopping of a person who is already falling, in other words, the system stops a worker’s fall that has already occurred, preventing impact at a lower level and protecting the fall victim by decelerating the rate of fall.
Fall Arrest may be considered appropriate where a worker needs freedom of movement to access a difficult to reach part of a structure eg an area where in Work Restraint the worker cannot align parallel to a running line, however Fall Arrest equipment also allows them to reach the point where a fall could occur.
A Fall Arrest system comprises an Anchorage connected to the user’s safety harness with a self-retracting lifeline, these function in a similar way to a car seat belt. A re-coiling main spring keeps a galvanised steel cable in light tension, allowing it to respond immediately in the event of a fall.
Overhead anchorage points reduce the angle of the users Fall Arrest Connecting Device, meaning that if he falls, the effects of a swing-fall or pendulum swing are greatly reduced.
When Scissorsafe is to be utilised as a Fall Arrest System, anchorage points should be pre-planned at regular intervals around the structures perimeters and leading edges so that the user can access an anchorage point above the work area.
The recommended limitations when working connected to an overhead anchorage is 30 degrees in a horizontal direction and fall arrest devices such as self-retracting lifeline, and Lanyards are unsuitable for operation at angles greater than this.
